Now that winter is here, many Michiganders like to venture out into the snow.

Maybe I am just an old, bitter man, but nothing about venturing outside in the winter sounds appealing to me. In my younger days, I really enjoyed the fact that Michigan gave us four solid seasons to enjoy. Now, not so much.

However, if you are the type that loves to get out in the wintertime and go hiking, snowmobiling, skiing, or whatnot, the Michigan Department of Natural Resources has some tips for you to stay safe in the cold elements.

What does the Michigan Department of Natural Resources suggest to stay safe outdoors in the wintertime?

The Michigan Department of Natural Resources encourages everyone that plans on heading outdoors for some wintertime recreation to check, dress, and pack for the weather. Here are some tips from the Michigan DNR:

  • Wear light layers that you can add and remove easily as to not overheat.
  • Always bring the appropriate equipment for the activity such as flashlights, rope, ice picks, etc.
  • Bring spare equipment in case something breaks.
  • Stay hydrated and bring snacks to keep your body going.
  • Use the buddy system.
  • Always let someone else know where you are going and for how long. It is also a good idea to schedule specific check-in times.
  • Carry some sort of communication device that gets service in remote locations.
  • Be mindful of your health and don't put yourself at risk if you are not feeling good.
