Michigan Lakefront Beach Reopens After Bacteria Risk
A popular Michigan lakefront is back open to swimmers after being temporarily closed due to elevated bacteria levels. Mott Lake, located in Genesee County, had been shut down earlier this week after water tests revealed E. coli levels exceeded safe limits for recreational swimming.
Why Mott Lake Was Closed
According to the Michigan Department of Environment, Great Lakes, and Energy (EGLE), water samples collected on Monday (6/24/2025) showed E. coli levels at 360.56 colony-forming units (CFU) per 100 milliliters, surpassing the state's threshold of 300 CFU. Officials typically conduct three water samples per day to ensure consistency before determining if a beach is safe for swimming.

Exposure to E. coli can lead to gastrointestinal issues and skin infections, prompting swift action from health officials. The Genesee County Health Department, alongside Parks & Recreation officials, closed the Mott Lake waterfront on Tuesday as a precaution.
What the Latest Test Results Show
However, after retesting the water on Wednesday (6/26/2025), results showed a dramatic drop in bacteria, with levels down to 139.82 CFU per 100 milliliters, well within safe swimming standards. This led to the lake’s reopening to the public on Thursday.

'Following the heavy rains last weekend, elevated levels were expected,' said Bill Hough, Environmental Health Director for Genesee County. 'Fortunately, water quality recovered quickly after improved conditions.'
All Genesee County Beaches Now Open
With the Mott Lake advisory lifted, all monitored public beaches in Genesee County are currently open and safe for swimmers.
