Thousands of people in Michigan are now at risk for identity theft, after more than 2,500 health records, as well as over 1,500 social security numbers and Medicaid ID numbers have fallen into the wrong hands.

A laptop and flash drive were stolen when a car belonging to a Michigan Department of Community Health employee was broken into. MDCH tells WEYI that the data on the laptop's hard drive was encrypted, but that on the flash drive was not. The hardware contained records and personal information for thousands of MDCH clients.

If you suspect your personal information may have been compromised, contact MDCH. The state is offering free credit monitoring for anyone whose records may have been stolen.
