According to McClurkin, her son took the gun apart and threw away the bullets, but did not notify a teacher or staff member until later. She said he was able to disassemble the weapon because of his hunting background.
Parent Reaction
At a school board meeting on Thursday (9/18), McClurkin told officials her son was scared at the time and thought he was helping other students. “He’s 11 years old. Seventh grade. Never been in trouble before,” she said.
School Response
The district said the expulsion was carried out in accordance with state law and district policy. School officials emphasized that all actions were taken to ensure student safety and that disciplinary measures were applied consistently, regardless of intent.
McClurkin says she’s now asking school officials to reconsider the expulsion. She insists her son was trying to prevent a dangerous situation, not cause one.
