Michigan Just Saw Its 23rd Tornado of 2026, And It’s Only July

The latest confirmed tornado in Michigan happened Tuesday evening in the Upper Peninsula, and thankfully it didn't stick around long or hurt anyone. Still, it's another reminder that this has been an unusually active year for severe weather.

The tornado touched down just south of Trenary in Delta County around 7:26 Tuesday night. The National Weather Service says it was an EF-0, the weakest rating on the tornado scale, with estimated winds of about 85 mph.

MLive reports that it stayed on the ground for less than a mile, reaching a maximum width of about 75 feet before lifting. The only reported damage was reported along Alger Delta 43rd Road, and fortunately, no injuries were reported.

What's really getting attention is the bigger picture. This is now Michigan's 23rd tornado of 2026. In a typical year, the state averages around 15 tornadoes, so we're well above normal, and it's only the beginning of July.

More Severe Storms Could Develop This Holiday Weekend

Meteorologists say Michigan remains positioned beneath the jet stream, which creates favorable conditions for rounds of strong to severe thunderstorms. That doesn't mean the entire Fourth of July weekend will be a wash, but it does mean scattered storms could develop quickly and become severe with little warning.
