NWS Confirms Multiple Michigan Tornadoes From Last Week's Storm

After a beautiful sunny day in Michigan last Thursday (5/15/2025), as the sun set we couldn't see what was coming. Forecasters predicted severe weather hitting the state late Thursday night into Friday Morning warning of a chance of tornadoes.

Those predictions came true across lower Michigan as multiple tornado warnings were triggered. The National Weather Service had it's hands full trying to assess the damage and report on what their investigations were able to find.

How Many Confirmed Tornadoes Hit Michigan Last Week?

From all the warnings issued, how many tornadoes actually touched down? The initial count reported by the National Weather Service was six late Friday night. These tornadoes touched down in Calhoun, Eaton, Genesee, Kalamazoo, Livingston and Saginaw Counties.

However they added three tornadoes to the list over the weekend including two touchdowns in Allegan County, and another twister that traveled from Kent County into Ionia County.

How Many Michigan Tornadoes Have Been Confirmed So Far In 2025?

According to the National Weather Service, as of yesterday (5/19/2025) the state of Michigan has seen a total of 25 tornadoes so far this year. We are one tornado away from 2025 making the Top 10 list of most total tornadoes per year.

In 1975 Michigan had a total of 26 tornadoes of the course of the entire year. We're not even half way through the year yet. 9 Confirmed Tornadoes Swept Through Michigan Last Week

After initially reporting six, the National Weather Service now says that a total of 9 tornadoes swept through Michigan's lower peninsula late last week.
