While most Houseplants in Michigan in general, are not considered to be dangerous or toxic, there are some that could be harmful if not handled properly.

Some people mistakenly assume that their houseplants are completely safe just because they purchased them from a trusted source and did not receive any explicit warning about potential risks.

There are some common houseplants that actually do come with a few risks if improperly handled.

This Is One of the Most Hazardous and Toxic Houseplants in Michigan

Dieffenbachia, commonly known as Dumb Cane, is considered a potentially dangerous houseplant if mishandled or ingested.

According to The Gardening Cook, the plant's poison can temporarily cause an inability to speak.

The plant contains calcium oxalate crystals, which can cause intense pain and swelling if they come into contact with the mouth, throat, or skin.

Look, we're not saying that you need to go and toss out your dumb Cane plants, they're perfectly fine to have throughout your home. However, if you have pets or young children, you might want to keep this plant out of reach.

While the burning sensation that comes with ingesting this plant is mild and temporary, for children and pets, the problems are more severe.

The effects are rarely life-threatening. As a matter of fact, I was only able to find one article that talked about someone's poodle dying due to consuming a potted Dumb Cane plant.

To sum it up, some houseplants can be harmful if eaten. So, remember: don't eat your houseplants.
