A Michigan woman won’t be spending years behind bars all at once for a deadly hit-and-run. Instead, she’ll serve her time one weekend at a time.

I know weekend jail sentences happen sometimes, but this one still feels really strange considering someone lost their life.

Stephanie Holt, 32, of St. Clair Shores, was sentenced Tuesday for a 2025 crash that killed 76-year-old Mary Hulswit.

Michigan Woman Drove Away After Deadly Hit-and-Run

This happened on November 1 near Harper Avenue and 13 Mile Road in St. Clair Shores.

According to Fox 2 Detroit, Holt was backing out of a driveway when she hit Hulswit. But instead of stopping and calling for help, police say she took off.

Hulswit was later found dead near the end of the driveway.

Even more bizarre, investigators say Holt drove past the scene again before eventually turning herself in.

Holt pleaded no contest in July to leaving the scene of a deadly accident. She could have faced up to 15 years in prison.

Michigan Woman Sentenced to Spend 100 Weekends in Jail

Instead of serving a traditional jail sentence, Holt was ordered to report to the Macomb County Jail every Friday at 5 p.m. She’ll do that for 100 weekends.

I’m sure I’m not the only one who finds this sentence a little bizarre. Holt was facing up to 15 years in prison, but she’ll be able to live her normal life during the week and report to jail only on weekends. Officials didn’t explain why the judge chose this unusual setup.

Holt was also sentenced to two years of probation, 200 hours of community service, and counseling. She was ordered to have no contact with Hulswit’s family and will receive credit for four days already served.
