Flint’s Iconic Abbott’s Meat to Shut Down After 118 Years
It’s hard to imagine a world without Abbott’s Meat. Think about it, Abbott's meat has been a staple in Flint for more than a century.
So that means no more of their ground beef for coneys. It’s a sad day for sure. This family-run place has been serving the community since 1907. After 118 years, Abbott’s Meat is finally shutting down.
Owner Ed Abbott II is retiring, and with that, the company will officially close by the end of 2025.
His daughter, Brooke Abbott Clothier, said the decision didn’t come easily. “That’s all he really knows,” she told MLive. “He has so many long-term employees and customers that have the utmost concern for him, so that’s probably why he hung on as long as he did.”

Abbott’s Meat wasn’t just a business. It was a family legacy. Ed started working there when he was just 18 years old. He stepped in after his dad passed away in 1957. And for decades, he was the guy who kept things rolling, staying true to what his grandfather started all the way back in 1907.
When Does Abbott's Meats Plan to Shut Down?
Abbott plans to keep things running through most of 2025, with the final shutdown expected by the end of the year.
Genesee County wasn’t the only area that relied on Abbott’s Meat. According to MLive, restaurants across Saginaw County, Lapeer County, Bay County, and even Lakeland, Florida (home to the Detroit Tigers spring training camp) counted on Abbott’s to preserve the authentic flavor of their coney dogs.
