A Sandwich Invented in Michigan most Michiganders Haven't Had Before
Somehow, an amazing wrap-like sandwich with soft, but somehow firm and fresh pita bread isn't on the radar for most Michiganders.
Perhaps they know the copycat versions different names? The original is only available at National Coney Island, though.
For those that don't know... introducing the Hani Sandwich.
Invented in 1985 right here in Detroit.
According to Crains Detroit Business, a chef by the name of Hani invented the sandwich at National Coney Island's Mack Avenue location.
Today, the Hani comes in five flavors:
- Black Cherry BBQ
- Bacon Avocado Ranch
- The Parm (think fresh garlic, mozza, marinara, etc)
- Grilled Chicken
- The Original Hani Special
- (Sometimes there's even a Fish Hani or Buffalo Chicken)
So, the next time you go to a coney island, don't fall for the fakes. Spend the gas money and visit National Coney Island around Metro Detroit.
It turns out the sandwich is so popular, National opened a new place called Pop's Hani's Shop located in the old Kalamata Greek Grill on Woodward Avenue in Royal Oak.
You've been warned, there's nothing like the original -- other diners have knockoffs and they're nothing like the original.
