Here in Mid-Michigan, we have some pretty solid options when it comes to getting a homemade breakfast or a Flint-style Coney dog. And there are plenty of restaurants around Genesee County that keep customers coming back for great food, friendly staff and that unmistakable local Flint feel.
Flint Restaurants That Have Been Around For Decades

Sure, there are some Flint-area restaurants that have become nationally or statewide known as local favorites. Big John Steak & Onion has been serving up its famous steak sandwiches for decades, while Halo Burger is practically a Flint institution all by itself.

In fact, Halo Burger celebrated 100 years in 2023, and Big John Steak & Onion celebrated its 50th anniversary in 2022.
Many Different Options For Many Different Appetites in Flint and Genesee County

But I wouldn't necessarily call either one a diner. They definitely fit more into the category of fast-food restaurants.

And when we're talking about diners, I'm thinking homemade breakfast, bottomless coffee, big portions, a stack of pancakes, an omelet the size of a hubcap and, of course, the occasional Flint-style Coney dog.
Flint Has Lost Some Legendary Diners
For me, one of the biggest losses was always Angelo's. The original Angelo's Coney Island on Davison Road closed in 2018 after nearly 70 years in Flint.

The franchise briefly continued at the US-23 and Grand Blanc Road location, but that location eventually closed as well.
Another Local Flint-Area Diner is Set to Close Permanently
B's Diner in Davison announced its permanent closure in June 2026 according to MLive. That restaurant was known for breakfast, burgers, fish and chips and other classic diner favorites. Its closing prompted plenty of customers to share memories online.
