East Side Soup Kitchen In Saginaw Food Giveaways This Week

Saginaw residents who are in need of food will have a couple of chances this week.

The East Side Soup Kitchen in Saginaw is hosting two different food distribution events this week. The first happens on Thursday, January 28th starting at 11am. The second event is a hot breakfast held on Saturday January 30th starting at 9am. Both events are totally free, and open to the public.

The East Side Soup Kitchen is teaming up with Hidden Harvest and the Food Bank of Eastern Michigan to make these food events possible.

This has been an extremely busy last 12 months for all soup kitchens, and food banks throughout the state. The pandemic has put so much strain on the system, that supplies have been dangerously low. The Food Bank of Eastern Michigan was so depleted at the end of 2020 that they were dipping into their emergency reserves.

The combination of massive amounts of job loss, and the long wait times to get unemployment money, many families have been hurting. This creates a very dangerous situation for everyone in our area. I think that we all believe that no family should wonder if they are going to be able to eat tonight. The problem is that many people are worried about their own security, so they are less apt to give to need based organizations right now.

The job that the food banks, and soup kitchens in our area have been able to do this year is nothing short of amazing. It's impossible to expect them to continuously work miracles over and over again though. So I am asking you to give whatever you can if you are in a position to give. It might seem like something small to you, but it can make a world of difference to a family in need.
