The Tigers have owned the Cleveland Indians in the second half of this season. That wouldn't change in tonight's game despite a 30 minute rain delay. Max Scherzer became the first 15-game winner for the Tigers not named Verlander since Kenny Rogers pitched for Detroit. Scherzer didn't have his best game, but his offense gave him enough backup to get the victory.
The Tigers scored 3 in the first inning, 1 in the second, 2 in the 4th and 5th, and one in the 6th. The Tigers got home runs from Delmon Young, Wilson Betemit and Miguel Cabrera, who hit his 30th in the 6th inning. Delmon Young and Magglio Ordonez each drove in 3 runs in tonight's game.
Joaquin Benoit struck out the side in the 8th inning and Jose Valverde got the final 3 outs to earn his 48th save in 48 opportunities. The final score was 9-6. The Tigers still don't know who they will play in the first round of the playoffs. Tampa and Boston both won tonight and are tied for the Wild Card spot going into the final regular season game tomorrow. Tampa hosts the Yankees and Boston is at Baltimore. The Texas Rangers are still a game ahead of the Tigers for home field advantage in the first round, and are playing the Angels tonight on the west coast. The Tigers and Indians will play tomorrow night at 7:05 at Comerica Park to wrap up the regular season. Rick Porcello will go for his 15th win of the year against Cleveland rookie Zach McAllister. The Tigers need to win this game to keep thier hopes alive for home field advantage. Otherwise, they would start the playoffs in New York against the Yankees. We'll know for sure late tomorrow night.
