CMU students will soon be able to study abroad once again.

After shutting down the study abroad program due to the pandemic, Central Michigan University will begin sending students overseas for study next spring. The University's Office of Global Engagement announce the controlled and limited restart of the program this week. Specific COVID-19 criteria and vetted programs and locations will need to be met for students to apply.

What COVID-19 criteria must be followed?

  • Host institutions have COVID-19 safety protocols in place
  • Partners are offering in-person classes and have ability to move online, if necessary
  • Onsite local staff available to assist students 24/7
  • The rate of active COVID-19 cases in-country is lower than the United States
  • The current country vaccination rate is above 50% and steadily increasing
  • Quality health care is readily available locally
  • COVID-19 testing is readily available
  • Availability of international flights and conducive immigration requirements

Also, Central Michigan University will not operate the study abroad programs in locations that have a Level 4 Travel Health Notice. According to the United States Centers for Disease Control and Prevention, a Level 4 Travel Health Notice means to avoid travel to that destination due to a very high level of COVID-19.

Do CMU's study abroad programs require a COVID-19 vaccine?

Yes. All students participating in study abroad programs must be fully vaccinated for COVID-19 prior to their departure in accordance with Central Michigan University's COVID-19 Spread Mitigation Policy.
