When it comes to sweet treats and confectionary indulgences, chocolate is a favorite among Michiganders—and the world at large. Chocolate bars and other chocolate candies are a major go-to. But despite the rising cost of most candy, chocolate products are expected to see even more price hikes, according to manufacturers.
Michigan Chocolate Prices on the Rise
Prices of goods and services Michiganders rely on daily have gone up across the board. From basics like coffee and beef to gas and even housing, it’s become difficult—sometimes impossible—for many to keep up. And now, we can add chocolate to the growing list of things that may become unaffordable for everyday Americans.

Jody Hayden, co-owner of Grocer's Daughter Chocolate in Michigan, has seen a lot in her 24 years in the chocolate business. She says the cost of chocolate-making supplies has surged in recent years—making this not just a local concern, but a global issue across the entire chocolate industry.

Hayden expressed her deep concerns for the future of chocolate:
"...this is a little different because it's climate change driven. I just don't know how we'll recover from it—and if we'll recover from it."
Climate Change Is the Main Culprit
Tariffs aren’t yet a major issue, but cocoa—the essential ingredient in chocolate—is largely imported from West Africa. As global tariffs rise, candy makers worry about future obstacles. But for now, the current spike in prices is being blamed primarily on climate change and soaring cocoa costs.

Even Pennsylvania-based Hershey has announced price increases on its popular products, including Hershey bars, Kisses, KitKats, Reese’s Peanut Butter Cups, and York Peppermint Patties.
