Shortly before midnight last night, (October 29, 2025 at 11:13 PM EDT to be exact), several reports came in of an extremely bright green flash streaking across the northern sky in Michigan according to Michigan Storm Chasers.

What the Footage Shows from Manistee

The group reviewed its Aurora-camera database and found a clear capture from the Manistee camera showing the flash across the northern horizon. You can even see a faint auroral glow in the same footage.

Viewers are encouraged to check home security or other cameras around 11:13 PM to see if they caught the moment. The flash left a visible streak behind it as it occurred.

Mid-Michigan Eyewitnesses and The Comment Thread

Although the cause isn’t officially confirmed, many commenters suggest a meteor burning up in the atmosphere is the most likely explanation.
While Manistee is on the Lake Michigan shore where many of the reports originated, but as we’ll see below, folks in Mid-Michigan are also chiming in.

Here’s how the chatter went on the Facebook post, honest observations mixed with a healthy dose of Michigan humor.

One user said, “I live in a dark sky area and see these many times a year (I work outside at night). It’s 100% a meteor,' reflecting the more grounded side of the discussion. Others brought chemistry to the conversation. 'It being green when it burned up indicates it was made of a copper alloy.' was one comment. Someone responded, 'It doesn’t, green spectra is just the first excitation of copper…', diving into the nerdy weeds of astrophysics.

In and around Mid-Michigan, some added their own sightings:

I was actually wondering what this was. I saw it as I was driving home from Holly.

So yes, even though Manistee was the camera location, folks out here near Flint and Holly are saying they saw the flash too.

And then there are a ton of fun comments that kept the thread lively:

  • It was an alien craft. I spoke to them for about 30 min. Nice group of people.
  • Santa’s sleigh burning up on re-entry.
  • That’s just Bigfoot coming back to Michigan. He missed us!

So What Was It? Meteor, Aurora or Alien?

Given the timing, the visible streak, the green flash and the auroral glow, the meteor explanation is the front-runner. It may have been a small body entering the atmosphere, perhaps containing copper or other elements that caused the green hue, and burning up quickly. The fact that people several counties away (Holly/Flint area) also reported seeing something supports that this wasn’t just a local flicker.
And hey, in Michigan you never know if it might also be Bigfoot, Santa, or interplanetary visitors. But until the aliens check in, meteor it is.
