Michigan’s Night Sky Comes Alive Tonight with the Leonid Meteor Shower
Michigan sky-watchers, tonight is the night! The Leonid meteor shower reaches its peak late tonight into the early morning hours of Tuesday, and this year’s conditions couldn’t be better. With the moon only about 9% illuminated, Michigan is in for some wonderfully dark skies, perfect for watching fast, bright meteors streak overhead.
What Makes the Leonids Special
The Leonids are one of November’s biggest celestial events, created when Earth passes through tiny dust particles left behind by Comet Tempel-Tuttle. Those grains hit our atmosphere at incredible speeds, around 71 kilometers per second, and burn up in brilliant flashes of light.

Under clear skies, expect to see roughly 10 to 15 meteors per hour, though long-lasting 'Earth grazers' may appear earlier in the night. And while we’re not expecting a massive storm like the legendary Leonids of 1966 or 2002, this shower is known for sharp peaks and pleasant surprises.
When to Watch the Leonids in Michigan
Here in Michigan, you’ll want to start watching anytime after 11 p.m., but the best viewing will be after midnight and through dawn Tuesday.

Leo, the constellation the shower appears to radiate from, rises in the east, but the good news is that Leonids can appear anywhere across the sky. Just lean back, look up and take in the whole dome.
Tips for Getting the Best View
For the best experience, get as far from city light as you can. Michigan is full of great dark-sky spots, from rural farmland across the Thumb to stretches of the Lake Huron shoreline, Sleeping Bear’s inland overlooks and of course our Dark Sky Preserves. Bundle up, it’s November in Michigan after all. And give your eyes 20 to 30 minutes to adjust and avoid looking at your phone.
Whether you’ve watched the Leonids your whole life or you’re trying it for the first time, tonight’s show promises a little bit of November magic above the Mitten.
