National home goods chain At Home is preparing for bankruptcy and will shutter several locations across the country, according to multiple media reports.

What Led to 'At Home' Bankruptcy?

According to WFAA-TV, the chain began voluntary bankruptcy proceedings today. The Wall Street Journal reported last week that the furniture and home goods retailer would start closing stores soon after filing for bankruptcy. More closures may follow as the process unfolds.

Brad Weston, Chief Executive Officer of At Home, said in a statement that the retailer has "taken deliberate steps to strengthen the foundation" of the business, but a "rapidly evolving trade environment due to tariffs" has made operations more difficult.

A restructuring agreement will eliminate nearly $2 billion in debt and generate about $200 million in capital to help the company through the process.

Which At Home Locations Are Closing?

While no Michigan closures have been announced, the move raises questions about the future of At Home's stores across the state.

What This Means for Michigan Shoppers

Today’s announcement follows a wave of financial struggles among retailers such as Rite Aid, Forever 21JoAnn Fabrics, and Party City, which have all shut down stores in Michigan.
