“Hero. He’s our angel, our angel of mercy."

70-year-old Marshall Helm is an Air Force veteran who is also currently battling cancer. And now, for more reasons than one, he's a hero...again.

Last Wednesday morning, he was walking his granddaughter out to the bus stop in Salem, Illinois, when he noticed that the bus driver was trying to get his attention - the house next door was on fire.

He ran to his neighbor's garage and opened a side door and started yelling. Gary and Kathy Benjamin were sleeping when they woke up and heard Helms yelling in their hallway. Interestingly enough, even though they're neighbors, they didn't know each other...until that moment.

All three of them were able to escape from a back door, as the garage in which Helm had entered was blocked by flames. Unfortunately, the family lost their dog and two cats to smoke inhalation, along with everything else. Their son has started a GoFundMe for them to start over, and they are all calling Helm their "angel of mercy."

Helm told a local news station that he didn't even think twice about running into the burning home to help his neighbors, even though he'd never met them before, and he said he'd do it again.
