Watch How Quickly Thieves Install Skimmers at Michigan Grocery Stores
As we become more aware of the implications of identity theft, you may be surprised to see just how quickly thieves were able to install credit card skimmer devices at multiple Save-A-Lot store locations in the Detroit area.
Police in Detroit shared the surveillance video with WXYZ-TV, noting that the thieves had installed skimmers at two Save-A-Lot locations and were stopped by a savvy store manager before they could get away with it at a third location.

In the video below, you'll see just how quickly thieves were able to implement the credit card skimmers. The devices look nearly identical to the store's credit card terminals' keypads.
It's alarming to see how effortlessly the thieves are able to implement the devices.
Blocked by a Savvy Store Manager
After installing skimmers at two Save-A-Lot stores, pictures of the thieves were shared with other locations' store managers. Jammy Abro is the manager of the location near Conner and Mack.
"I told them, 'I know who you are, you need to leave the store,' and they acted like they didn't know what I was talking about and they just started walking out,'" Abro said.

What Can You Do to Stay a Step Ahead of Thieves?
Britton Foreman is a digital forensics expert for the Wayne County Sheriff's Office. He says use of this type of device is on the rise because they're readily available.
"Especially with technology and 3D printers, Amazon, you can go on Amazon and get a skimmer for $80," he said.
He adds that consumers need to be hyper-aware of skimming devices and take steps to protect themselves.
Abro says to grab the keypad at any credit card terminal you use. Try to move it and if it comes off, you know it's a skimmer.
"If you have an inclination that it looks different, if it feels different, if your card doesn't go in all the way if it sticks, protrudes out, let the store know, let the banks know," Abro said.
Contactless (or tap) payment methods and cash are safer ways to pay.
"Cash is always king," he said.
