The new Chevrolet Volt has been named the North American Car of the Year.  The award ceremony happened yesterday at the North American International Auto Show in Detroit.  The award validates the work that's gone into designing the Volt.  It also recognizes General Motors as a key player in the electric-vehicle market.  The car's engine and some of its body are produced in Flint.  In November, GM announced an investment of $138 million at Flint Engine Operations, which is preparing to build gasoline engines for the Volt and the Chevrolet Cruze.

The award should build much-needed consumer confidence for GM.
