He's known throughout southern California as the "street vet."
Dr. Kwane Stewart used to own an animal hospital where he treated high-end clients and their fur babies. When the financial crisis of 2008 hit, his business took a dive - people could no longer afford veterinary care for their pets. The homeless population skyrocketed, and Dr. Stewart wanted to help.
He started a soup kitchen in 2011 and offered for people to bring their pets for a check-up, and the line was SUPER long.
So, he started walking around downtown San Diego
He pays out of his own pocket for simple treatments including arthritis and skin problems and, for more serious care that requires an animal hospital, he has a GoFundMe page.
"I know that pets are reliant on people but I think people are even more dependent on their pets. They love them and care for them and it's genuine."
