Y2K came and went at the turn of the century with the world remaining intact.  December 21, 2012 is still over a year away.  But forget all of that, you'd best prepare yourself for today, October 21, 2011. According to Harold Camping, the world will come to an end today.

Camping, an Oakland, California minister, is claiming that based on his research and calculations, human life on earth will come to an abrupt end today.

Camping also predicted the world's end in 1994 and in May of this year.  Obviously, nothing happened and we are still here.  Others, from the Mayans to Nostradamus have predicted the end of life as we know it on December 21, 2012, but notice the wording "life as we know it."  This implies a chance in the way humans live their lives, not a complete obliteration of the human race as Camping is foretelling.

There are many different beliefs as to how the world will end.  Each religion has it's own theory about the end of days, but even the Bible's Book of Revelation calls for 1000 years of peace before the final battle between God and Satan.  Personally, I believe that there will be some sort of event in late 2012 that will alter the way we live, but I think the human race will go on beyond 2012... let alone today!
