You may have heard the buzz: starting July 1, senior drivers across the U.S., including those in Michigan, may have to jump through more hoops to keep their licenses. The claim has spread quickly online, raising alarms among older adults and their families. But is it true? Let’s take a closer look.

Viral news reports have been spreading rapidly, claiming that a new federal law will require drivers over 70 to undergo various tests to renew their licenses starting July 1.

According to the rumors, a schedule of vision, cognitive, and road tests would be introduced as part of a sweeping policy change affecting the roughly 48 million Americans aged 65 and older who currently hold driver’s licenses. While it’s true that the number of older drivers is rising, no such federal mandate is going into effect on July 1.

We did a little digging and discovered that each state — including Michigan — has its own set of rules regarding what tests are required to maintain a driver’s license.

While it’s true that some states have specific requirements for both younger drivers and older residents, there is no federal law mandating any kind of widespread testing.

What Michigan Requires

According to the Michigan Secretary of State:

  • Michigan driver’s licenses must be renewed every four years.
  • In-person renewals are only required every 12 years.
  • A vision test is only required during an in-person renewal.
  • No vision test is required when renewing by mail or at a self-service kiosk.
  • Drivers must update their license photo every 12 years.

The Bottom Line

Despite the viral headlines, there’s no federal law taking effect on July 1 that changes the rules for senior drivers in Michigan — or anywhere else. For now, Michigan’s licensing process remains the same, regardless of your age.
