Watch: Awesome Michigan Neighbors Help Elderly Man Shovel Driveway
I'm not crying, you're crying. Neighbors in Macomb County rallied behind an elderly man to shovel his driveway after they saw him trying to shovel while sitting on a folding chair.
The video (below) was taken by the man's neighbor and posted on YouTube by CBS Detroit.
Elderly Man Attempting to Shovel His Driveway
The woman, who has chosen to remain anonymous, recorded the clip earlier this month after the Metro Detroit area received several inches of snow. She spotted the elderly man attempting to shovel his driveway while sitting on a folding metal chair.
The woman notes in the video that she would have come to the man's rescue had she not been home alone with four young children. However, she was able to contact another resident in the neighborhood, who quickly came to the man's rescue and finished shoveling the driveway.
For the rest of the season, the woman and her husband will pick up the tab to have the man's driveway cleared by the company that takes care of their landscaping.
Tips to Avoid Injury While Snow Shoveling
Shoveling snow is demanding and taxing work. The American Journal of Emergency Medicine reports that from 1990 to 2006, nearly 200,000 people were treated in emergency rooms for snow-shoveling-related injuries.
AARP offers some common-sense tips to avoid injury or death, such as using a snowblower and avoiding shoveling snow immediately after eating. They also recommend pushing snow rather than lifting it and lifting smaller loads when you must lift snow.
When shoveling, remember to dress appropriately and lift by bending your knees rather than your back.
