As we celebrate Teacher Appreciation Week it's amazing to think about how many awesome and inspiring teachers that we have here in Michigan. They work tirelessly to shape minds and unlock potential.

So when it comes to selecting the Teacher of the Year from educators across the state, it is often difficult to first narrow down the list of contenders, then make the ultimate determination.

How Is Michigan's Teacher Of The Year Selected?

According to the Michigan Department of Education website, every year since 1952, one of Michigan’s outstanding teachers has been named Michigan Teacher of the Year.

The competitive process which takes several months starts in the fall when 500 teachers are nominated. The educators are narrowed down to the best in each of ten regions. This year the 10 Regional Teachers of the Year were named in February. Of those 10, just one will be honored as the Michigan Teacher of the Year.

Who Is The 2025-2026 Michigan Teacher Of The Year?

Mr. Corey Rosser from Lapeer County knew he was a regional winner, but was shocked and surprised this week when was named the 2025-2026 Teacher of the Year. Mr. Rosser is teaches social studies at Quest High School. The alternative high school is part of North Branch Area Schools in Lapeer County.

Yesterday (5/6/2025), Michigan State Superintendent Dr. Michael Rice had the pleasure of surprising the North Branch teacher with the news as students and colleagues cheered.

Humbled and overwhelmed by his new honor, Mr. Rosser said, “I think you could throw a pebble down our hallway and probably find a teacher more deserving than me.” He continued by saying, “I work with so many amazing people here. Really, to me this is all about a culmination of what our students have been working toward. We’ve had 580 or so graduates over 20 years. Any teacher knows they all remember you. They create a really special place to learn and a really special place to teach.”
