Some teachers do more than just teach a class. They help students figure out what they’re good at, what they enjoy, and maybe even what they want to do with their lives. That’s what makes Clio High School teacher Matthew McMullen so special.

Clio High School Teacher Gets a Huge Surprise

McMullen was one of 25 public high school skilled trades teachers from across the country named a winner of the 2026 Harbor Freight Tools for Schools Prize for Teaching Excellence. MLive reports that the award comes with $75,000 for Clio’s skilled trades program. And the way he found out made the moment even better.

When the announcement was made, the students erupted in applause.

Why Students and Staff Say McMullen Stands Out

McMullen said he was completely surprised, calling the award a culmination of not only his work, but the hard work of everyone in the district. WNEM reports that he teaches four classes and has spent nearly 20 years doing something he clearly loves. McMullen said:

I’m really, really fortunate I get to teach my hobbies, I get to teach my passions.

Principal Rachel Traver said what makes McMullen stand out is the way he treats his students. He talks to them like adults and helps them see possibilities they may not have considered, especially students who may not see college as the right path.

How McMullen Plans to Use the $75,000 Prize

McMullen plans to use the money to replace welders, make upgrades in the wood shop and address other needs. For him, it’s about community, giving back and having fun.
