Sterling Heights Police Officer Cameron Maciejewski arrived just in time to save a newborn baby from choking to death.

Dashcam video provided by the department shows Maciejewski racing to a home that had called for assistance - their 3-week-old baby girl was choking on something.

Maciejewski, who was wearing a mask, pulled up to the house and the family had already brought the baby outside for help. In the video, you can see the baby's mother and other family members panicking in front of the squad car.

Officer Maciejewski grabbed the infant and frantically began performing back thrusts on the child...and she coughed up the object that was obstructing her airway. When she starts to cry, relief on the family's faces is clear in the video.

"If it wasn’t for Officer Maciejewski’s quick, calm, lifesaving actions, the outcome of this incident could have been tragically different," the department said in a statement that was released to Fox 2 Detroit. "Not only did the officer save the baby, but the officer did an outstanding job consoling the family."

The baby was taken to the hospital afterward by the Sterling Heights Fire Department.

Babies take a long time to learn how to chew and swallow solid foods; it can take less than four minutes of choking to cause permanent brain damage. Choking is a very common cause of death in young children because of the small size of their airways. Food and small objects are usually the perpetrators;
