Here Are Some New Laws That Will Go Take Effect in Michigan in 2025
As we celebrate the new year, let's take a look at some new laws that are going into effect in Michigan in 2025.
Michigan's Minimum Wage is Going Up
Beginning on January 1, 2025, Michigan's minimum wage will increase from $10.33 to $1056 per hour, under the Improved Workforce Opportunity Wage Act.
Michigan's minimum wage will increase once again on February 21, 2025, to $12.48 per hour for hourly workers.
- For residents under 18, the minimum wage will increase to $1061 per hour.
- Tipped employees will also see a bump, with wages increasing to $5.99 per hour.
Earned Sick Days
Beginning on February 21, 2025, all Michigan employers must provide designated sick time to employees.
Employees will accrue sick time at the rate of one hour for every 30 hours worked.
- Businesses with at least 10 employees will be required to provide at least 72 hours of paid sick time each year.
- Businesses with fewer than 10 employees will have to provide at least 40 hours of paid sick time per year plus an additional 32 hours of unpaid sick time.
Cage-Free Eggs
You may have seen a notice while shopping at Kroger, Meijer, or other Michigan retailers that Michigan will soon be a 'cage-free' state.
This means that Michigan retailers will be required to buy and sell only cage-free eggs. According to the USDA, eggs labeled cage-free are laid by chickens that have access to food, water, and freedom to roam in an enclosed area during their laying cycles.
Michigan's cage-free law takes effect on January 1, 2025.
Car Safety Restraints
House Bill 4511 will modify Michigan's vehicle code to require children 12 or younger to ride in the correct child-restraint system in the rear seat of the vehicle if it has a rear seat, and if all other seats are not occupied by children.
The bill also has additional provisions based on a child's age and height.
Automatic Voter Registration
Beginning on June 30, 2025, anyone who applies for a driver's license or state ID will automatically be registered to vote. The Secretary of State will automatically send the applicant a notice of registration which will include instructions how to decline voter registration if so desired.
