
A Totally Unique Michigan Vacation: Become a Lighthouse Keeper
You can live in an authentic Michigan Lighthouse and be a guest lighthouse keeper for two weeks this summer.
While Michigan offers nearly endless vacation opportunities (Mackinac Island or a Traverse City Winery, anyone?), this may be one of the most unique opportunities to get away and play in Michigan's Beautiful North.
The Tawas Point Lighthouse is accepting applications for guest lighthouse keepers, looking to immerse themselves in history and enjoy a two-week stay at the historic lighthouse.
Being a Guest Lighthouse Keeper Requires a Bit of Work
While becoming a guest lighthouse keeper is certainly a unique getaway-from-home experience, it should be pointed out that the gig requires a bit of work. But the lighthouse keeper's schedule is designed to give guests a bit of playtime to enjoy some of the recreational activities and water sports offered in the area.
Lighthouse keepers are required to greet visitors, lead tours, provide information on the facility, and perform some basic maintenance like sweeping, taking out the trash, and cleaning up after themselves.
Lighthouse Keeper Requirements
Guests all have to be 18 or over, pass a background check, and be able to climb 85 steps to the top of the lighthouse (think of the view!) a couple of times each day.
The program is open to groups of four who are available to stay for two weeks at a time and the cost is $250 per person for the two-week stay. There are sleeping quarters, one bathroom,
