The Midwest’s Biggest ICE Detention Center Is Coming To Michigan

It's generally a quiet serene setting. Some old abandoned houses and some dirt roads encompassed by a forest with birds and wildlife all around.

Except for an abandoned prison that will now be the largest ICE detention center in not just Michigan, but the entire Midwest. Baldwin, Michigan is in one of the poorest counties in the state, Lake County. Which is why locals are somewhat skeptical of the new plan.

Why Are Lake County Residents Skeptical Of ICE Detention Center?

Local media has reported that the currently vacant North Lake Correctional Facility has opened and closed a total of four times. Will the fifth time work?

One Lake County resident said that, 'It’s been closed more than it’s been open'. He continued to tell M-Live, 'I think it’s great for people to work, but the purpose is questionable.” 

What Is The Plan For North Lake Correctional Facility?

Upon the opening of North Lake it will hold around 1,800 beds making it one of the largest in the country, but the largest in the Midwest. Mississippi is the state with the largest in the country holding 2,154 detainees per day, followed by Texas, Georgia, Louisiana and Arizona with prisons that hold between 1,300 to 1,700 each day.

When you think about the size of Michigan compared to the total area of the Midwest it's staggering to think that an old shut down prison in Baldwin, Michigan will be the largest hub of the ICE Detention Centers in the Midwest.
