Michigan’s Growing ICE Presence Is Closer to Home Than You Think
Los Angeles, St. Louis, the southern border... but Flint? Michigan has quietly become one of the heaviest federal immigration footprints in the country. ICE agents in this state have jumped nearly 70 percent over the past decade. Border Patrol agents are up too.
What the 100 Mile Border Zone Means for Michigan
And remember, because we are a border state, the entire state of Michigan falls inside that 100 mile federal 'border zone.' That means Flint does too.

Mlive reports that there are now nearly 500 ICE agents stationed in Michigan, and more than 2,200 Customs and Border Patrol agents. New detention centers are opening, including a 1,800 bed facility in Baldwin and a warehouse in Romulus. Not to mention expanded offices in Detroit and Grand Rapids.
Michigan Law Enforcement and the 287(g) Program
And then there is the local angle. Seven Michigan law enforcement agencies are now part of the 287(g) program, essentially partnering with federal immigration authorities. Some counties are housing detainees. Some communities are debating sanctuary policies. Others are staying quiet.
Why This Feels Different for Flint
This is not a red state versus blue state conversation. This is not partisan. It is simply about geography. If someone wanted to send a message, to create fear, or to make headlines, where would that land harder? Detroit, a big city used to federal presence and national attention, or Flint? A city that has already been through the wringer. A place where trust in institutions has been tested before.

After seeing what has happened in L.A. and St. Louis, the idea that this conversation is now very real here feels different. And maybe that is what is most jarring of all because it is not 'somewhere else' anymore.
