A 14-year-old Boy Scout from West Michigan is being hailed as a hero after he rushed to help a tourist in medical distress during a visit to Mackinac Island.

Kenny Recor has spent the past two summers serving as a Scout Honor Guard on Mackinac Island. As part of his daily duties, the 14-year-old helps raise the flags, gives directions, and answers questions from tourists — all while living by the Boy Scout motto: Be Prepared.

Scout’s Quick Action on Mackinac Island

That motto took on new meaning Tuesday, June 22, when Kenny saw a man collapse near Fort Mackinac. Sensing the man was suffering a heart attack, Kenny immediately sprang into action, putting his training to the test.

“I knew at that moment — I was scared — but I had to do something,” Kenny told WOOD-TV“I felt my training kick in, and I remembered that during a heart attack, time is the most important factor, so I knew I didn’t have time to worry and be scared.”

Training Kicks In During Emergency

Kenny made sure someone was calling 911, asked where he could find the island's nearest Automated External Defibrillator (AED), and took off running up and down the hill to locate it.

Fortunately, an off-duty nurse was nearby and had already begun CPR, so the man didn’t need to be shocked.

Proud Scout Dad Reflects on Son’s Heroism

Kenny’s father, Ken Recor, is a former Eagle Scout and said he couldn’t be prouder of his son.

“The Scout motto is to be prepared, and Kenny was prepared,” he said. “The third point of the Scout Law is that a Scout is helpful, and he was able to be helpful.”
