JC Penney is unloading more than 100 department stores across the country, and six of them are in Michigan. The stores are being sold to a private equity firm as part of a deal that marks yet another shakeup for the retailer.

After JC Penney's 2020 bankruptcy filing, the Copper Property CTL Pass Through Trust was formed by the company's lenders. That trust has now announced an all-cash sale of 119 JC Penney stores to an affiliate of Onyx Partners, Ltd. According to USA Today, the companies expect the deal to close on September 8.

JC Penney's Recent Store Closures and What’s Next

JC Penney closed about 200 stores when it filed for bankruptcy during the pandemic. A handful of additional locations shuttered earlier this year, but the company still operates about 650 stores nationwide — including 23 in Michigan.

All 119 stores, including the six Michigan locations slated to be sold, are currently open. However, the future of those stores once the deal is finalized in September remains unclear.
