After 50+ Years, Milford Independent Cinema Is Closing
Sad news for movie fans everywhere, not only in Milford but throughout Michigan.
Milford Independent Cinema, a nonprofit movie theater, has announced its closure after more than 50 years in Oakland County.
The theater has experienced its share of ups and downs over the years, from COVID and the Hollywood actors’ strike to rising costs and inflation. As you will see in the video below, the community rallied last year to support the theater, raising well over $10,000 through a fundraiser.

Fast forward to 2026, and sadly, this is goodbye to the beloved movie theater. According to WXYZ Detroit, Milford Independent Cinema can no longer sustain its business due to fewer customers, a lack of funding from major corporations, and broader changes in the movie industry.
Think about it - so many movies are now debuting on digital streaming platforms, or soon after a national movie theater release.
When was the last time you were inside a movie theater? Full disclosure: it’s been many years for me. Not because I don’t enjoy movies - I am just extremely claustrophobic.
That is a story for another day.
When will Milford Independent Cinema officially close?
You still have time to visit the theater and catch a movie. The cinema’s final day will be Saturday, January 31, 2026. For show listings, click here.
Milford Independent Cinema is located at 945 East Summit Street, 48381.
We wish everyone at Milford Independent Cinema all the best, and thank you for entertaining movie lovers for over 50 years.
