A new memorial lock wall in Genesee County is giving family and friends a meaningful way to honor and remember loved ones who have passed away. It offers a space where memories can be kept alive and shared.

People are invited to honor a loved one by writing their name on a lock and attaching it to the wall. This simple act allows family and friends to leave a lasting tribute in a public space, creating a collective memorial.

The lock wall is located near “The Rock” on Hammerberg Road in Flint. The idea and wall came from Brandie Black, who lost her son to fentanyl poisoning. According to WNEM, she was inspired after seeing a similar memorial in Ohio and decided to create one in her own community.

These types of walls are often referred to as Love Lock Walls, and they can be found all over the world. You’ll see them in places like New York, Pittsburgh, and Colorado, as well as in international destinations such as Germany, Paris, and Hong Kong. Whether they’re used for love, remembrance, or personal tribute, these lock walls have become a global tradition.

As you will see in the video below, residents have already begun placing tribute locks on this new Flint memorial. I’m sure many more have been added since filming.

Thank you, Brandie Black, for taking the time to create this memorial in Genesee County.
