Recently I was made aware of a weed that can be deadly if your dogs get into it.

The deadly weed you need to be aware of and keep away from your dog is called Foxtail.

Foxtail weeds are dangerous to dogs because of their sharp, barbed seed heads that can easily become embedded in a dog's skin, ears, nose, eyes, or paws.

The barbed seeds can burrow into a dog's body and cause infections, abscesses, and tissue damage as they move through the body.

In severe cases, they can reach vital organs like the lungs or brain, which can be fatal if left untreated.

Inhaled foxtail seeds can get lodged in a dog's nasal passages, throat or lungs, causing breathing difficulties, gagging, coughing, and increased risk of infection.

Foxtail seeds embedded between toes or in paw pads can cause swelling, limping, and intense licking of the affected area as the dog tries to remove the foxtail.

Foxtails that enter the ears can cause head tilting, scratching at the ears, and ear infections if not removed quickly.

The barbed shape of foxtail seeds makes them extremely difficult to remove once embedded, as they can only move forward deeper into the body. Removal often requires sedation and surgery.

What Can You Do To Keep Your Dog Safe?

To protect your dog, it's important to avoid areas with foxtail weeds during their spring/summer growth season, thoroughly check your dog's coat, ears, paws and skin after outdoor activities, and immediately remove any foxtails found.

Another suggestion is to keep your dog's fur trimmed short can also help prevent foxtails from embedding.
