Look Up! All of Michigan Could See the Northern Lights This Week

UPDATE 10/11: According to Fox 2 Detroit, the whole state of Michigan could again see the northern lights Friday, Oct. 11 into Saturday, Oct. 12. 

ORIGINAL STORY 10/10: We've really been lucking out with opportunities to catch the Northern Lights this year!

Well, a strong geomagnetic storm may give us another shot to witness them in Michigan this week.

The Aurora Borealis have been putting on magical displays recently, lighting up the skies with brilliant purple, green, and red hues. The stunning natural phenomena is caused by the interaction between the Earth's magnetic field and charged particles from the sun.

According to National Oceanic and Atmospheric Association's Space Weather Prediction Center, a fast coronal mass ejection (CME) erupted from the sun during the evening of Sunday Oct. 8. As of 11:15a.m. on Thursday, Oct. 10, NOAA  the CME has arrived on earth.

NOAA has issued a strong (G3) geomagnetic storm warning Thursday, Oct 10 into Friday October 11:

The CME strength and structure are being closely scrutinized for potential geomagnetic storm intensity, but, G3 levels are now expected due to the magnitude and potential of the CME, therefore G3 or greater warning has been issued. G4 (Severe) levels remain likely with the watch still in effect and even a slight chance of G5 (Extreme) levels due to initial observations of the CME strength. Updates will continue as conditions are met with Alerts issued accordingly.

The aurora could be visible over much of the northern have of the U.S. They might be seen as far south as Alabama and northern California.

It's possible that all of Michigan could see the northern lights tonight! 

According to Fox 17, a G4 geomagnetic storm is the second-strongest level. It's only the second one of that severity in 20 years. It's possible it could be similar to the storm that brought Northern Lights to much of the country back in May. That storm was G5.

Keep in mind that the geomagnetic storm could cause come satellite/ cell phone disruptions.

To see the northern lights, find an area away from light pollution. Remember that smartphones can often capture auroras that the human eye cannot. The best viewing times are usually between 10p.m. and 2a.m.
