When it comes to pizza, how good is good? According to a recent expert list, pretty darn good.

Michiganders across the state have their favorites it's true, but all in all, we can all agree we have some of the best pizza around right here in the Mitten state. Now, experts agree on what we already knew...Michigan has some of the best pizza in the country.

Recently Food & Wine wrote about the best pizza in every state and and narrowed down the Top 10. Food writer David Landsel set out to put his taste buds to the test and compile the list that stretched coast to coast.

So How Did Michigan Do?

Pretty well! Michigan found themselves smack dab in the middle on the prestigious pizza list coming in 5th.  Food & Wine gave a bit of a history lesson on pizza for the state noting Detroit's own style of pizza, the square style with the crispy edges, and mentions it's "start".  Created back in 1946 by Gus and Anna Guerra who introduced the city to the style at Buddy's Pizza on Conant and McNichols.

The Top 10 List shaped up like this:

  1. New Jersey
  2. Connecticut
  3. New York
  4. Illinois
  5. Michigan
  6. California
  7. Pennsylvania
  8. Massachussetts
  9. Ohio
  10. Missouri

A Few Michigan Shining Stars

Food & Wine also gave some shout outs to a few shining stars that helped Michigan secure their spot in the top 10. Cloverleaf Bar & Restaurant in Eastpointe, Loui's Pizza in Hazel Park, and the newly opened Michigan & Trumbull Pizza in Detroit sealed the deal. Fricano's in Grand Have and Scrib's, in Muskegon and Grand Haven also helped bring home the prize.

How Did We Make the List?

Just in case you're wondering, Food & Wine picked 'The Best Pizza in Every State' relying pretty much on taste, taste, and taste.

'While there was a certain amount of collaboration, in the end, most of the tasting fell to me, a native New Yorker with decades of experience eating pizza all across the country. I've lived everywhere from Chicago to Los Angeles to Seattle to New England, and over time I've learned that I have no specific style preference. The kind of pizza I like best is pizza, and I will try all of it, at least once."

Of course the list is surely going to be up for debate, but arguing the fact with taste testing could be pretty fun. Check out the best pizza in every state here.
