Police in Warren are investigating an incident in which a grandmother accidentally shot her 3-year-old granddaughter.

Police tell WXYZ that the woman found a loaded AK-47 under a bed on the second floor of her home. As she attempted to unload the weapon it went off, shooting the girl in the leg. The child was located on the first floor of the home. The bullet then traveled through another floor into the home's basement where it narrowly missed another 18-year-old relative.

Police say the girl is expected to make a full recovery, and the investigation is ongoing.

Why is this such a chronic problem? Gun owners need to store their weapons safely and out of the reach of children. Why is this so hard?
