Grand Valley State Dance Team Goes Viral With Tik Tok Hip Hop Routine
There's dancing, and then there's Grand Valley State University dance team dancing. Noted as one of the top collegiate dance teams in the country, the Lakers just made sure the world knows how incredible they are with a Tik Tok routine that's gone viral.
Now, I saw the routine when they posted it simply for the fact I have been following them for quite a while. As a former dance team coach, I love watching some of the standouts on a high school level move on to dance in college. GVSU has some of the best dancers in the country on its team and has been making a huge mark at competitions for the past few years.
The routine making all the "noise" on social media was one the Lakers took to Florida for Dance Team Union's College Classic a few months ago. Under the direction of head coach Rael Orao, they brought home the Championship trophy for DII Jazz and Hip Hop categories, and it's the Hip Hop routine that's getting them noticed.
The team was filmed performing the routine on their home court at GVSU. The choreography was done by renowned choreographer Sienna Lalau, and is mindblowing, to say the least. Set to a Beethoven mix, the dancers show why they took home the championship.
So how good was it? As of the writing of this article, they have 1.7 million views on Tik Tok alone, with 21,000 shares. They are also getting some celebrity love with World of Dance and Jenny McCarthy reaching out according to Fox17.
"I was pleasantly surprised to see it go so viral so fast. It was at 1 million views in 24 hours after we posted it," head coach Orao told Fox 17.
As a former coach, seeing an often overlooked college sport get some much-deserved attention for all of the hard work is definitely a win. Congratulations GVSU Dance Team, can't wait to see what you bring to the floor next year.
