Snow Day Scoreboard: Which Genesee Schools Are Running Out of Snow Days?
We have been dealing with a brutal winter here in Mid-Michigan. From massive temperature swings to tons of snow, even ice has felt like a plague. But as bad as it’s been here, there are many locations to our north, including the Upper Peninsula, where it has been even worse, as hard as that may be to believe.
What Are Michigan's Statewide Education Requirements?
In the state of Michigan, the law requires that all school districts must offer no less than 1,098 hours of instructional time, according to a representative from the Genesee Intermediate School District.

There is a provision for a total of six snow days, or emergency non-schooling days, per school year, with an opportunity for districts to seek a waiver for an additional three days.
What Counts as an Emergency School Closure in Genesee County
That got me wondering how many days schools here in Genesee County have used this school year due to winter weather. During my investigation, I discovered that these excused days off also count toward power outages, HVAC or mechanical issues, and sadly, a church shooting that forever changed Genesee County.
