You Can Feel Winter Letting Go in Mid-Michigan Right Now
Living in Flint and around Genesee County, there’s something about the beginning of March that always makes me stop and look around a little more closely. You can feel winter loosening its grip, even if it’s slow and stubborn.
Why March Feels Different Across Mid Michigan
Climatology says March is when Michigan quietly starts warming up, about a degree every couple of days, that's according to MLive. That doesn’t sound like much, but when you live here you notice it. The sun sits a little higher in the sky, the light feels different, and suddenly those bitter winter afternoons don’t seem quite as harsh.

At the start of the month, a typical morning around here still bites. Teens are common when the sun comes up, and a lot of us in Mid-Michigan walk outside and wonder if spring is actually real or just a rumor. But even early March sunshine has surprising strength. By afternoon, temperatures can creep into the mid-30s, and that sunlight feels like a promise.
Could Michigan Really Hit 70 Degrees Next Week
What amazes me every year is how quickly things change. By the end of March, mornings usually hover right around freezing instead of the deep chill we start with. Afternoon highs often push into the upper 40s or even around 50 degrees across southern Michigan. That’s roughly a 15-degree swing in daytime highs over just one month.

Of course, March in Michigan never follows the script perfectly. Some days feel like January decided to stick around. Other days hint at April or even May.

And this year might give us one of those moments. There’s a chance parts of southern Michigan could flirt with 70 degrees sometime early next week if a warm southern wind lines up just right.
Even if it doesn’t quite happen, the idea alone is enough to make you look toward the sky and think, spring really is on the way.
