Will Michigan Kids Still Get Free School Lunches After September?
As many of Michigan's 1.4 million students head back to school this week, the future of Michigan's universal meal program seems to be uncertain, leaving parents and school leaders scrambling for answers.
The Michigan School Meals (MSM) program launched in 2023, making breakfast and lunch free for every public school student in the state. The program is funded through the end of Michigan's fiscal year, which ends on September 30.
Why Free Meals May End After September
What happens after that depends on the state budget. Lawmakers have yet to finalize funding for fiscal year 2026, and if money isn't allocated for the Michigan School Meals program, free school breakfast and lunch could disappear from Michigan schools.
Michigan kids are heading back to school with free breakfast and lunch on the menu, at least for now. The state’s universal free meal program is funded only through September 30, and after that, districts are making different decisions about what to do if lawmakers don’t extend it.
How Michigan Districts Are Responding
Where Districts Stand on Free Meals
- Midland Public Schools: Free breakfast all year, but lunch limited to income-eligible students after Sept. 30. (OurMidland)
- Northville Public Schools: Free meals for all through September; waiting on budget decisions for October. (Northville Schools)
- Swartz Creek Community Schools: Plans to continue free meals for all students through the school year. (CBS Detroit)
- Huron Academy (Sterling Heights): Committed to offering free meals to all students throughout the year. (CBS Detroit)
What Parents Should Do Next
State officials are urging parents to prepare in case universal free meals end. Families should complete the Education and Nutrition Benefits form as soon as possible.
That form determines whether students qualify for free or reduced-price meals based on household income. If the Legislature does not extend funding for the Michigan School Meals program beyond September 30, schools will fall back on those income guidelines.
Parents are encouraged to check with their local district for updates, since meal policies may change quickly once the new state budget is finalized.
