Flint Officer’s Suicide Highlights Mental Health Strain in Policing
The Flint Police Department is mourning the loss of Officer Charles Redmond, who died Sunday afternoon in a church parking lot in Mt. Morris Township. City officials confirmed Redmond took his own life around 2:30 p.m. while still on active duty. The Michigan State Police are handling the investigation according to MLive.
It is a painful reminder that the people we rely on to protect us are often carrying far more than we ever see.
City Leaders Speak on Mental Health and Public Safety
Flint Police Chief Terence Green and Mayor Sheldon Neeley both spoke to that reality in the hours after Redmond’s death. Neeley’s words were especially sobering, noting the mental and emotional toll public safety work can take, and the responsibility we all share to look out for one another before that weight becomes unbearable.
Remembering a K9 Officer’s Service to Flint
Redmond joined the department in December 2020 and was assigned to the K9 unit. The city described him as a beloved officer, recognized multiple times for his performance and dedication. Those acknowledgments paint the picture of someone who showed up, worked hard, and served his community with commitment.

Like many stories involving real people, Redmond’s career was not without complexity. A past assault charge was dropped after additional training and counseling, a matter the city says was addressed internally years ago. None of that changes the reality of what happened Sunday, or the grief now felt by his family, colleagues, and the wider Flint community.

This loss forces an uncomfortable but necessary conversation about mental health, especially for first responders who spend their careers running toward other people’s worst moments.
