Father, Son Duo Rescue Missing Woman in Muskegon

"If this was my sister stuck in the woods, I’d want someone to go back for her.”

25-year-old Brett Postema was walking to a hunting spot last Thursday, October 1st in the Muskegon State Game Area when he thought that he heard faint cries for help. He felt uneasy about it; he called a friend, who could also hear the cries over the phone. Brett then drove to his dad's house and told him what he heard.

“I don’t have a good feeling about it,” Brett told his father, according to the State of Michigan's website. “We need to go back out there. If this was my sister stuck in the woods, I’d want someone to go back for her.”

He called 911 and met with first responders at the game area. While they were searching, he heard the cries for help again and found a woman at the base of a tree near a swampy ridge. She had been taking a walk on Tuesday night when she fell down the ridge; she'd survived for two days, in the elements, by herself.

She was hypothermic and had injured her ankle.

Michigan Department of Natural Resources Conservation Officer Jackie Miskovich was on-site to help, but she credits Brett and his dad with the rescue.
