City By City: Here’s How Much Eclipse You’ll See In Michigan

As we look forward to Monday's Total Solar Eclipse, just how much of this phenomenon will you be able to see in various cities throughout Michigan?

We decided to take a look.

A Total Solar Eclipse on Monday, April 8, 2024

According to NASA, a Solar Eclipse occurs only at the new moon phase when the Moon is between the Earth and the Sun. As this happens, the moon casts a shadow on Earth and blocks (or partially blocks) our view of the Sun.

When this happens on April 8, only those who are located along the "Path of Totality" will have their view of the Sun completely blocked, albeit for a short time.

Masses of People Flocking to the Path of Totality

Erie, Pennsylvania is one of those cities along the Path of Totality. Erie has a population of about 94,000, but city officials are expecting up to 200,000 visitors and lookie-loos to pile in on Monday to get a glimpse of the Eclipse.

(Indulge me for a moment while I brag.)

One of my sons lives in Erie and attends medical school there. So we're taking the opportunity to visit with him, fill our faces, and view the Eclipse from his front yard.

Eclipse Viewing Varies by Region in Michigan

In Michigan, Eclipse viewing will vary by region, depending on your proximity to the Path of Totality. Scroll down to see how much of the effect of the eclipse will be visible in 20 cities around our state.

The city of Luna Pier, Michigan is the only city in Michigan where residents (and gawkers) will be able to see the Eclipse in its totality. This small city in the southeast corner of Michigan (just north of Toledo) is in the Path of Totality.

On the other hand, residents of Marquette, Michigan will see the moon block just 82.4% of the sun at 3:11 pm.
