There’s Only One City in Michigan Where You Can See the Total Eclipse in April
As the Solar Eclipse in April draws near, you'll be hearing more and more about where and how to view the phenomenon. But where in Michigan can you see it?
What is the Total Solar Eclipse?
The total solar eclipse will occur on Monday, April 8, 2024. According to NASA, the moon will completely block the sun while it passes between the sun and Earth. The map below shows the "Path of Totality" in the United States (the dark band) stretching from Texas to Maine.
Where are the Best Places to See the Eclipse?
For the best view of the eclipse, you'll want to be within the "Path of Totality" in order to view the full experience.
That path begins in the US in Texas and continues on a northeast trajectory to Maine. Cleveland, Ohio, Niagra Falls, New York, and Indianapolis are a few cities that will see the full effect of the eclipse.
I plan to visit my son, who lives in Erie, Pennsylvania - another city that is expected to be in the path of totality.
Will the Solar Eclipse be Visible in Michigan?
NASA indicates that a very small portion of both Michigan and Tennessee will be in the eclipse's path. While many of us in Michigan will be able to get a peripheral view that day, there is just one city in Michigan that will be in the prime viewing area.
Luna Pier, Michigan is expected to see the full effect of the Solar Eclipse, 2024.
According to News 3, Luna Pier will experience the eclipse at 3:13 pm, and it will only be fully visible for 34 seconds. Compare that to cities like Erie, which will see near darkness for about four minutes.
Luna Pier is located in the southeast corner of Monroe County, near the Ohio state line. About 1,300 people call Luna Pier home.
