Northbound I-75 in Wayne County was closed for several hours Monday after a massive pileup involving more than 50 vehicles just before noon.
What Happened on I-75 (Crash Details)
Video from Metro Detroit News shows the aftermath of the crash, which snarled traffic for hours between 6 Mile and 8 Mile roads. Michigan State Police told Detroit’s WXYZ-TV that troopers responded to 25 separate crashes involving 59 cars and semi-trucks. The station noted that total does not include vehicles that may have left the scene without filing a crash report.
Police say the northbound lanes of I-75 reopened shortly after 4 p.m.
Winter Weather Conditions at the Time
Authorities said Monday’s snow squalls and high winds likely contributed to the dangerous conditions and urged drivers to use extra caution during winter weather.
“We continue to remind drivers to travel at a speed where they can control their vehicle,” said First Lieutenant Mike Shaw of the Michigan State Police. “If you are driving at a speed or following at a distance where you need to slam on your brakes to stop, you are asking for trouble.”
Several people were reported injured in the crash, but authorities say no fatalities were reported as a result of the pileup. Police continue to remind drivers to slow down and use extra caution during winter weather, especially during snow squalls and high-wind conditions that can quickly turn Michigan highways dangerous.
