Traffic on the Mackinac Bridge was temporarily halted Monday night following an emergency incident involving a person threatening suicide.

According to authorities, eyewitness posts and dispatch updates, the Mackinac Bridge was shut down at about 8:38 p.m. due to an individual on the bridge. The closure was not related to weather or mechanical issues. The Mackinac Bridge Authority later confirmed the span reopened after the “emergency incident” was cleared.

While law enforcement officials have released limited details, a timeline provided by the Straits Area Scanner indicates a caller reported a suicidal individual on the bridge before hanging up. Multiple police agencies responded, shutting down both northbound and southbound traffic as a precaution.

Authorities say the woman stopped her vehicle on the northbound side of the bridge and climbed over the guardrail at about 8:46 p.m. She was reportedly armed and remained on the outer edge of the bridge for roughly 45 minutes while officers attempted to negotiate with her.

Police Resolve Situation Without Further Incident

At approximately 9:28 p.m., authorities reported they were able to talk the woman down. Officers used a rescue rope and safety harness to bring her back to safety.

Both northbound and southbound traffic on the Mackinac Bridge reopened later Monday night.
